WORLDWIDE WEDNESDAY:”I Made You/You Made Me” – Owiny Sigoma Band

What do you get when you put British electronic musicians in a recording booth with Kenyan instrumentalists? Why not listen and find out? The Owiny Sigoma Band was created in 2009 almost entirely by accident. A group of British musicians were traveling through Kenyan villages to play music with local artists when they stumbled across Joseph Nyamungu, a master of the nyiatti (a traditional Kenyan lyre), and Charles Owoko, a percussionist. Seven years and three albums later, the band has found itself in a unique place in the world of music. Their sound is simultaneously Kenyan and British, and despite their willingness to experiment and push boundaries, their music is still accessible. “I made you / You made me” is a catchy pop track written by Jesse Hackett, the band’s singer and keyboard player, as a celebration of the birth of his daughter.
